Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Mobile Edge Computing

Given the proliferation of wireless sensors and smart mobile devices, an explosive escalation volume data is anticipated. However, restricted by their limited physical sizes low manufacturing costs, these devices tend to have computational capabilities battery lives. To overcome this limitation, may offload tasks nearby computing nodes at network edge in (MEC). At time writing, benefits MEC systems not been fully exploited, predominantly because computation offloading link still far from perfect. In article, we propose enhance exploiting emerging technique reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which are capable “reconfiguring” propagation environments, hence enhancing links. The RISs can be maximized jointly optimizing both as well communications resource allocations systems. Unfortunately, joint optimization imposes new research challenges on system design. Against background, article provides overview RIS-assisted highlights four use cases design solutions. Finally, performance characterized with aid a specific case study, followed range future ideas.
